Letters, 1893-1901.

The collection consists of 21 letters of Elizabeth (Elsie) Ogden Adams, daughter of Charles Francis Adams (1835-1915), to her cousin, Louisa Chapin Hooper, detailing her travels and activities through the fashionable centers of Europe. The letters describe her rocky trans-Atlantic voyage on the S.S. Gascogne, a winter sojourn at Biarritz, France (1893-94), a court ball with the monarchs of Italy (1897), and a papal mass at the Sistine Chapel (1897). The letters reveal Elsie's wit and critical observations of European social life, customs, and local personalities and events.
